In my first ever column for Total Installer, I asked the question “Are you on the Smart Journey yet?” and introduced you all to our theory about the direction we thought our sector would go.

Almost two years to the day since I penned that first column, I thought what better time to revisit the ‘Smart Journey’ and see how we’ve got on. (Spoiler Alert: we were pretty much spot on!)

The journey concept was based on the effect Smart tech was having on other industries – like the heating industry for example. The complete overhaul of that sector made us realise the sheer potential that smart technology had to revolutionise the way we secure and manage our homes too, but it was clear that those transformations did not happen overnight.

The Market Shift: From Cost-Cutting to Value-Adding

The past few years have been challenging for many in the fenestration industry. A market slowdown prompted a shift in strategy. The focus on achieving minor cost reductions to stay competitive has been replaced by a desire to add value through differentiation.

Prices can only drop so low.

Fabricators and installers are seeking ways to stand out from the competition, and one of the most promising avenues is through integrating smart technology into their products.

It’s been a slow burner, but there are definitely signs that point to a growing realisation that smart products offer a compelling value proposition to consumers who are increasingly seeking modern, connected home solutions. The Smart Journey is well and truly underway!

Embracing the Smart Future

More and more professionals are asking, “Why sell a product that’s ready to be Smart when we can sell a Smart product?”

This question is reshaping the market.

Quite a few fabricators are now exploring the possibility of integrating smart sensors directly at the manufacturing stage, making it even easier for installers to offer smart products, with some major fabricators already gearing up to sell smart doors as standard, starting as soon as this September!

This game changing move will simplify the sales process for installers and provide homeowners with an immediate entry point into smart security technology. It’s a win-win situation that sets the stage for further smart product adoption.

Kubu’s Innovation: Simplifying Smart Integration

One of the significant advancements we’ve made at Kubu is the development of sensors that eliminate the need for a hub – probably the biggest hurdle in going down this route to market.

This innovation not only simplifies the installation process, but enhances the user experience. Homeowners can activate their smart sensors simply by scanning them with their mobile devices. This seamless integration makes smart technology more accessible and more attractive to a broader audience.

Benefits for Installers and Fabricators

For fabricators, incorporating smart technology into their products from the get-go provides a significant competitive advantage. It differentiates their offerings in a crowded market and meets the growing consumer demand for smart home solutions.

By streamlining the installation process, products are ready to go out of the box, reducing the workload for installers.

For installers, the shift to smart products represents a fantastic opportunity.

With smart doors becoming standard, the upsell potential for smart windows and other products is enormous. This not only boosts profits but also positions you as forward-thinking professionals who offer the latest in home security technology.

Looking Ahead: The Smart Revolution

Harking back 2 years, we talked about a journey that would take a while to get going, but once it did, it would start to explode.

There’s a real feeling in the air at the moment that the ignition point is not too far away. All the signs are there. The future is looking very bright indeed.

We’re so excited to be at the forefront of this transformation of our industry.

The journey from prediction to realisation underscores the importance of innovation and adaptation in a rapidly changing market. By embracing smart technology, the industry is not only enhancing its offerings but also ensuring long-term growth and customer satisfaction.

Be Smart. Work with Kubu.
